D. Hirst, Fuck Yeah!

Damien Hirst – Beautiful Inside My Head Forever, Sotheby’s London, 15 & 16 September, 2008

£111 Million bagged in two days at Damien Hirst’s Sotheby’s sale, including the best seller at £10.3m, “The Golden Calf” (pictured on right). Who knew that a stuffed shark in a tank of formaldehyde could sell for £9.6m while on the other side of the pond Wall Street is declaring crisis! if I didn’t know any better, I would think that I was watching an episode of “Modern Wank” courtesy of Harry Enfield. What an absolute piss take! Nevertheless, it’s good news all around. In the first place, some people do have money and they are spending it on contemporary art and in the second place, Hirst deserves it. He’s a brilliant businessman and sometimes even a brilliantly creative artist. Love his work or hate his work, but you can’t deny his ability to “work it”. His work is irresistibly intriguing. He’s transformed from his post-Goldsmith’s YBA days to an icon for Contemporary Art.

Hirst as quoted in the Gardian: “The market for art is bigger than anyone knows. I love art and this proves that I am not alone…”
